Catalia "Cat" Fisa is a powerful clairvoyant known as the Kingmaker. This smart-mouthed soothsayer has no interest in her powers and would much rather fly under the radar, far from the clutches of her homicidal mother. But when an ambitious warlord captures her, she may not have a choice…
Griffin is intent on bringing peace to his newly conquered realm in the magic-deprived south. When he discovers Cat is the Kingmaker, he abducts her. But Cat will do everything in her power to avoid her dangerous destiny and battle her captor at every turn. Although up for the battle, Griffin would prefer for Cat to help his people willingly, and he's ready to do whatever it takes to coax her…even if that means falling in love with her.

My Thoughts:
I love it when book friends get so excited over a book, they push it until you almost break from the pressure to read it. A Promise of Fire, is one of those books for me. I honestly don’t even know how this one got by me at all! It has YOU WILL LOVE ME written all over it!
One of my favorite things about starting a new series is learning about the world and magic. A Promise of Fire has such a unique world with Greek Gods, magic and DRAGONS. Granted, it’s one that had some series gaps and one that leaves us room to learn from, but still. Amazing none the less.
What made me really, really love this book though were the characters. Cat is the type of character I love to read about. She is strong, fierce, and that mouth on her gives many a run for their money. She has insecurities and fears, just like anyone else, and while at times her actions to push people (aka, Griffin) away were tiring, I get it. Griffin, Kato, Flynn and Carver too, were such awesome characters. I am excited to see more of them in the next book!
Now, as far as the romance goes? I loved it! I thought Griffin came off rather strong at first, but it’s just his personality, which takes some getting used to. Their attraction is obvious but Cat has some things to work out before allowing herself to accept it.
A couple of things though – Cat reminded me a lot of Kate (Kate Daniel’s series). Now, this is probably why I loved her so much, but I also had this… since of déjà vu while reading. I also felt like the “mystery” behind her heritage was pretty obvious. AND View Spoiler » This book isn’t without its flaws, but it sure was a great start to a series and I look forward to the next one!
So, if you’re looking for a new fantasy series to start, with a sassy heroine, sexy romance and yes, dragons, this A Promise of Fire will sure do the trick!

I think Nick had raved about this book a lot and it got me so intrigued. I’m not one to read adult fantasy. I don’t know why, but I can’t seem to get into them. Only recently did I find an NA Paranormal book that I loved as much as another NAP I had read early on. I’ve been wanting to expand more and I think this one is the way to start! I love that Cat sounds like a very realistic person. That will probably help me enjoy this one a lot. Great review!!

Ohh, I’ll add it to my tbr list if it’s that good then!
I feel like I need new series in my life, and since I, believe it or not, have NEVER read an adult fantasy I think it’s about time.

Yessss! I love this too, and totally agree about the Kate Daniels assessment. Since it looks like that series will come to an end with the 10th book, then maybe this series can help heal that loss. 😀

I heard this audio on Sunday and I heard it all in one sitting, it was a long ass audiobook but I couldn’t put it down. So good!

Okay, your review has helped convince me even more. I need this book in my life. And the reference to Kate Daniels just makes me want to start that series too (I have the first book on my shelf). I’ve heard plenty of good things about this book already, especially about the mythology in it so I already wanted to read. You’ve just reminded me why. Great review.
