"It’s been twenty three days since Quinn has slept for more than minutes at a time. Demons have invaded her dreams, stalking her, and whispering of her death. The lack of sleep and crippling fear are ruining her life. Energy drinks and caffeine pills don’t make a dent. When Quinn dozes off in the school hallway, Aaron, an amnesiac with a psychic ability, accidentally enters her nightmare. The demons are determined to keep them apart, and Aaron from discovering the secret locked away in his memory. Together, they could banish the darkness back to the underworld for good. That is, unless the demons kill them first."

After seeing this on netgalley, it sounded like something right up my alley. It sounds pretty cool right? Not to mention a pretty cover! It started out strong and creepy, but it wasn’t long before everything came crashing down and I lost interest.

Plagued by nightmares, Quinn hasn’t slept much in 23 days. Trying to escape them, she goes to extreme measures to keep herself awake. However, for some apparent reason these.. demons are starting to haunt her waking life, making Quinn question her sanity. Honest to goodness, this was the BEST part of the book. It was chilling at times, well written and to be frank, I honestly wasn’t sure half the time if she was really seeing things or was just bat shit crazy. The descriptions of the demons gave me goose bumps from time to time. However… the creepy aspect was just not enough.

The writing was OK. It wasn’t bad, since she obviously knows how to creep you out. I liked her prose and thought the concept on the entire plot was interesting. But the execution was.. jumbled. I felt like I was on a roller coaster. In a bad way. A steady incline, being the demons, fog and nightmares. Then just BAM! Huge drop, the return on the high school drama. I was drawn in, engrossed and then it just.. changed. It lacked the.. “wow” factor that I expected, since it started out fantastic. I wasn’t expecting all the high school drama, and once it started it overshadowed EVERYTHING. The attempt to make it mysterious was poorly done and the minuscule explanations at the end were confusing. I felt it was out-of-place and was only there to set up the next book.

Initially, I felt sorry for Quinn. Her life basically went to shit, then she started having these nightmares, only to have them all the sudden become her reality. After awhile though, I just didn’t care. Yeah, she went from pretty much having everything to nothing, a little dejection is understandable. BUT. Her pity parties and selfishness blew my mind. She kept focusing on her and her (ex)boyfriends “relationship” and her position on the cheer squad. Woman, you have MORE issues here. YOU ARE SEEING and HEARING THINGS. Her confused feelings for Aaron where irritating, the back and forth becoming too redundant. As for Aaron. Apparently developing some sort of psychic power after dying, has issues of his own. And dude was almost as creepy as the demons. In a stalker-ish way. Again, later explained (a little) but not enough to redeem him. And the constant misunderstandings between Aaron and Quinn got to be too much.

Overall~ I wasn’t a fan. Poor execution, bad character development and traits and lack of solid, strong explanations at the end overshadowed the creep factor.

It is really disappointing when a book starts off great but then declines, since it should be the opposite. The romance also sounds pretty shaky so I will probably avoid this one. Thanks for you honesty!
