Imogen and her sister Marin have escaped their cruel mother to attend a prestigious artists’ retreat, but soon learn that living in a fairy tale requires sacrifices, be it art or love.
What would you sacrifice in the name of success? How much does an artist need to give up to create great art?
Imogen has grown up reading fairy tales about mothers who die and make way for cruel stepmothers. As a child, she used to lie in bed wishing that her life would become one of these tragic fairy tales because she couldn’t imagine how a stepmother could be worse than her mother now. As adults, Imogen and her sister Marin are accepted to an elite post-grad arts program—Imogen as a writer and Marin as a dancer. Soon enough, though, they realize that there’s more to the school than meets the eye. Imogen might be living in the fairy tale she’s dreamed about as a child, but it’s one that will pit her against Marin if she decides to escape her past to find her heart’s desire.
My Thoughts:
Roses and Rot is one of those books I categorize under RARE AND PRECIOUS GEMS. It’s one of those finds that you haven’t heard much about – much to your dismay – and immediately fall in love with and never want to let go.
This a story of two sisters – equally talented and equally haunted by their abusive mother; both searching for a way to escape her hold. When they discover there is a way to ultimate success, and to escape their mother’s clutches. But at what price? And what happens with the two are competing against each other?
This book is magic. Kat’s writing pulls you in and holds on like a vice grip. It’s haunting, yet beautiful, and it’s easy to place yourself within the pages and picture this world. I was both longing to visit, yet horrified at the thought of it.
I loved the deep-rooted relationships between all the characters, especially Imogen and Marin. Even after years of not seeing other or speaking, their bond is strong. It was heartbreaking when certain things got in between the two, especially since I knew what was going on and why. I was happy with the resolution and would love to revisit these characters.
If you’re in the hunt for a story full of fairy tales & magic, with beautiful, strong relationships, I highly recommend Roses and Rot. It’s beautiful from start to finish.

This is on my radar and list. I’m happy it’s not a retelling even if it looks like that.
tonyalee
It sounds like a retelling, but while there are fairy tales mentioned, and Imogen writes her own, there’s no aspect of a retelling at all.
I hope you like it!! Let me know once you finish.
