Elizabeth has a new job at an unusual library - a lending library of objects, not books. In a secret room in the basement lies the Grimm Collection. That's where the librarians lock away powerful items straight out of the Brothers Grimm fairy tales; seven-league boots, a table that produces a feast at the blink of an eye, Snow White's stepmother's sinister mirror that talks in riddles.
When the magical objects start to disappear, Elizabeth embarks on a dangerous quest to catch the thief before she can be accused of the crime or captured by the thief.
Polly Shulman has created a contemporary fantasy with a fascinating setting and premise, starring an ordinary girl whose after-school job is far from ordinary and leads to a world of excitement, romance and magical intrigue.
Why did I pick it up?
Well like I said, the second book The Wells Bequest, caught my eye first and while the librarian told me that she read the second book first, I personally, wanted to start the series in order. I am weird like that. So when I got my copy and read what it was about, I was EXCITED. I mean, a library for magical items? YES.
Describe the book in 5 words
Magical. Funny. Sweet. Enchanting. Mysterious.
Who was your favorite character, and why?
I would have to say Aaron. He is one of the other pages (helpers in the repository) and while he wasn’t always nice to Elizabeth, he had the best intentions at heart and used his brain more than anyone else. But of course, I liked Elizabeth! She made some silly mistakes, due to insecurities with herself, a new school and navigating her friendships, but that’s all normal. I love how well she took to everything, too!
Who would LOVE The Grimm Legacy?
Anyone who likes urban fantasy, fairy tales and the like. There are many different aspects to the novel that make this one so much fun! The adventure, magic, friendship, first crushes and the mystery behind it all. This is also a great book for anyone looking for a MG/YA cross over. The characters are older than what you would typically find in MG, and there were mentions of kisses. So it does appeal to all age groups.
Are there Illustrations?
Yes, some! Just small one on the chapter headings.
I really liked it! I loved the magical aspect of it – I mean, imagine being able to check out Snow white’s stepmother’s mirror? Or see the shoes of the 12 dancing princess’? It’s quite fun to think about and picture. Plus, the building of friendships was on point. It portrays mistakes a girl can make in order to obtain, and keep friends. It shows her growing into her own and discovering more about herself and magic at the same time.

- Does his sound like something you’d enjoy?
- If you were able to borrow any magical item for 3 days, what would it be and why?
