I have had this post on my mind for ages – but haven’t really had the desire to write it until a few weeks ago. It was one of those, “WHAT SHOULD I WRITE ABOUT?” moments that I have randomly (usually at night when I am trying to fall asleep but my mind will NOT stop whirling) and this topic just kept popping into my mind! So, here we are.
There are many different angles of this topic I want to discuss. One – breaking up with a series. Two, breaking up with an author and last, breaking up with a genre. Either way, Breaking Up is Hard To Do!
There are many series that I have stopped reading – for many different reasons. It could be because I didn’t like the direction the series was going. It could be because I have SO MANY BOOKS AND TOO LITTLE TIME. It could also go hand in hand with breaking up with an author. It could also be because I have lost patience waiting a year for a book – but it seems as if I am not a series girl like I used to be.
Which is a shame.
I can’t think of a genre that I have quit reading per se – but there are definitely sub-genres that I just don’t care for anymore. Like say, Dystopians. And I almost broke up with New Adult all together because holy batman, were they getting ridiculous. Luckily, I found so many great books and amazing authors that turned it around for me.
But other than that, I haven’t really broken up with a genre.
This one is a little harder to discuss because just like with series, there are several different reasons TO break up with an author. For me personally, there aren’t VERY many.
Authors behaving badly. I don’t hold everything an author says against them. They are people too and they are just as passionate and opinionated as the rest of us. But there IS a line, and there are a few that have crossed it and I just cannot support someone like that.
Another reason? ALL their books are the same. Those that know me well, know one author in particular I am talking about. The story lines are all similar, the characters are pretty much the same; just change some physical features and a name and BADABOOM!
Granted, I have found that there are some authors whose writing style is just not for me. That is nothing bad against them, just we don’t mesh well.
Tell Me Your Thoughts
- Have you quit reading books by a particular author? Why or why not?
- How many series do you think you have quit reading?
- Have you “broken up” with a genre?
